The Tekunin are a fictional clan in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series.

About the Tekunin[]

The Tekunin first appeared in the Game Boy Advance title Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition, which revolves around the same story as Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. The group is comprised of cybernetic ninja shown to be serving Sektor. The meaning of the clan's name could refer to "iron ninja" or "tech ninja". "Tek" or "teku" may stand for to "tekko", which means "iron" or the slang for tech, and "nin" could be used as short for ninja.

In Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition, Sektor's biography screen revealed that, after he failed to gain control of the Lin Kuei in a battle with Sub-Zero, he fled to Japan in order to create his own clan of cyber-ninja known as the Tekunin.[1] His ending in the game states that he was indeed able to find volunteers to undergo the mechanizing process, allowing him to create a home base there as his clan's power grew in the nation. It is also said that Sektor soon used the Tekunin to conquer all of Japan, although it is unknown if this part of his ending is canon.[2]

The clan returns in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, featured prominently in the game's Konquest mode. During the story, the main protagonist Taven is ambushed by Sektor and brought aboard his Tekunin Warship. Sektor questions Taven about the message he received from his father's alter.[3] Eventually, the ship is attacked by Sonya's Special Forces team.[4] Taven escapes in the ensuing chaos, fighting through several waves of Tekunin warriors and defeating Sektor himself before the warship self-destructs. However, Sektor is able to survive the ordeal, and dialogue between him and Sonya indicates that his clan will still remain despite the ship's destruction.

The role of the Tekunin in Armageddon is expanded on in Sonya's character biography. It states that Sonya had learned of the group collaborating with forces outside of Earthrealm, which prompted her attack. While searching for survivors from the fallen ship, she lost contact with Jax, who she presumes was captured and experimented on by the clan.[5] This is further elaborated in Jax's ending, wherein he becomes aware that Sektor had implanted a chip in his brain. In retaliation, Jax defeats him in combat and takes control of the Tekunin for himself. As with all the game endings in Armageddon, it is unknown if these events are yet canon.[6]
