"Quarter of five" is a manner of referring to time in the English language. It is similar to: "quarter past five" and "quarter to five." While the two aforementioned phrases are easily interpreted, "quarter of five" is generally regarded as ambiguous. The MLA, however, has determined that "quarter of five" refers to the time 4:45.[1]
